Happy Chinese New Year!

Hey folks!

My last update is pretty long ago. Many things happened.  I was concentrating on a new hobby and the beautiful weather made me rather go outside than sitting in front of my computer. But now it’s time to share a few highlights you’ve missed so far!

On February 20th, we went to San Francisco to celebrate New Year. Yes, indeed. Because the Chinese calendar of 2016 just started on February 8th.

And Chinatown was the right place to watch the big Chinese New Year Parade! It started at 5 pm, so we went there at 2 in order to get a good spot.

The parade itself was great! There were dozens of marching bands, decorated wagons and of course the famous lion dancers with their imaginative costumes. In between we also saw cute groups of children performing traditional Chinese dances or showing some martial arts. And the highlight was a huge dragon worm which was about 200 feet long and finished the parade at eight o’clock. Just take a look at some photos:

Interesting facts about Chinese 2016:

Chinese New Year 2016 is a year of the Monkey. For people born in a year of the Monkey (1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004), like me, 2016 is considered a bad year. This is because Tai Sui, the God of Age, which is an imaginary star, brings misfortune to those in zodiac years matching their year of birth. Fortunately I found a few good advises how to avoid bad luck in 2016 if you’re a Monkey. Wearing red or jade accessories is well considered, as well as facing the opposite direction of Tai Sui’s position, which in 2016 is south-southwest. So just look northeast to get Tai Sui behind you 😉
